Am I getting senile or are the puzzles just getting harder. On May 12 (Hard) I could do it only by seeing that one 8 in box6 fails i.e. wrong one "solves box 6 but then box3 fails on pressures from "45s".

Now on May 13 I find that I have to postulate in box 3 If this is not a 5 than Box 6 is in trouble hence must be a 5 here.

Are these moves logical? or have I missed a more usual simple logic?

I hope that things are getting a little harder. At least, I'm tinkering with the definitions of hard and v hard to try and ensure that the v hards can't be knocked off without breaking sweat.

Other than adding the possibility of xwings, this is all tweaks rather than major reworks, so your normal arsenal should get through.

George: Looking back on notes from May 13 I found my comments.
1). Naked (3,4,5) in Row 4, Block 6.
2.) Five is constrained to Row 9, Block 7.
3.) (7,9) Pair at R7C2 and R7C4.
Apparently I was able to solve completely from here.
I hope that helps. Charles

Charles

Thanks

Mind you I think your second move should be 1s constrained to row 8 block 7 since this gives the 79 in block 7 allowing naked pair and staightforward from there!

Incidentally the mechanism for constraining the 1s might be classed as an X wing in 1s in boxes 8 and 9 - but maybe classifying it thus might be just "showing off"!

I could not solve May 12 Hard puzzle until I just tried the "Trial and Error" method on the 8's in Box 6 has described somewhat above. I do not like finding a solution based on this methodology, but found no possible other solution. Thanks for the clue above, or I would have never revisited and solved this puzzle.

There are many ways to skin a sudoku Smile This is the order i made the May 13:
Code:
hidden singles: r8c6=6, r4c6=8, r7c1=8,r2c9=8
hidden pair 49 in r1c89
naked single: r6c2=4
naked pair 26 in r12c1
hidden single 2 in r4c2, 6 in r6c3
line/box: 1 in r4c4
hidden pair 27 in r35c9 (r1c9=49)
box/box: (r1c79=49:) 5 in r1c46, not in r3c6 -> (r3c9=27) 5 in r3c8
3 in r3c5
box/line: 5 in r7c7
5 in r4c9
box/line: r3c3=8

So you just have to denote (or keep in mind) 3 pairs.

I'm pretty sure I did this puzzle but all this talk about it has made me curious. It doesn't seem to be available in the archives, which don't go past May 6. Can anybody post it?
