I really enjoy posting puzzles for others to solve. I generate them with my puzzle generator and then go through them manually to try and find those that present a reasonable level of difficulty for manual solvers.

Of course, I sometimes miss a shortcut and someone cracks a puzzle with less effort than I'd expected. There are also times when everyone misses a technique that opens up the puzzle. Nothing's perfect!

Now, we have a Forum for daj95376 to post his puzzles for others to enjoy!

(And, to discuss.)

Good idea, Keith!

I like Danny's puzzles a lot and I'm glad we have our own sudoku creator in residence Smile.

Are you going to move over all the threads from the "others" section? That'd be quite an impressive bunch to start things off ...

[Edit: The threads have been moved - keith]

Sounds interesting.

Earl,

Just hit your "Back" button and look at the index of topics. Generally, one topic = one puzzle. I've been doing way fewer Menneske and Vanhegan since Danny has published his puzzles.

DAJ is a new member to this forum who has waaaaay too much time on his hands. He's been around FreeCell/Sudoku forums for awhile. Keith recognized him when he joined.

DAJ also has an old puzzle generator whose design was (hopefully) to create extremely difficult puzzles. It was moderately successful. Fortunately, the old generator could be modified to restrict which techniques were allowed when creating puzzles. This often resulted in difficult puzzles based on a limited set of solution techniques.

DAJ has been tweaking his generator and generating puzzles that he then manually examines for suitability for posting. Feedback from forum members has helped guide him in his selection process. He's always open to constructive suggestions Exclamation

And, in UPPER CASE! Razz

Danny, does your solver do these reversible XY-chain loops / cycles we have been talking about?

Keith, my solver has minimal support for loops. This is because I don't record intermediate eliminations in a chain. All secondary loop eliminations are picked up individually. If a loop causes the initial cell to be reduced from "abcdef" to "bd", then I report it.

Just to make sure there's no confusion, I pick up XY-Chains just fine.

Code:
 your loop
 +----------------+----------------+----------------+
 | 2    5    39   | 4679 367  3467 | 8    37   1    |
 | 79a 67-9 367-9 | 1    8    2    | 39b  4    5    |
 | 4    1    8    | 79   5    37   |2-39  237  6    |
 +----------------+----------------+----------------+
 | 59   69   2    | 3    1    8    | 7    56   4    |
 | 3    8    67   | 45   67   45   | 1    9    2    |
 | 57d  4    1    | 267  267  9    | 35c 3-56  8    |
 +----------------+----------------+----------------+
 | 8    23   5    | 26   9    36   | 4    1    7    |
 | 6    79   79   | 8    4    1    | 25   25   3    |
 | 1    23   4    | 257  237  357  | 6    8    9    |
 +----------------+----------------+----------------+

Code:
 my solver's output
 {  2} -9r2c1  7r2c1  5r6c1  3r6c7  9r2c7  [XY-Chain] <> 9 [r2c23]
 {  1} -5r6c1  7r6c1  9r2c1  3r2c7  5r6c7  [XY-Chain] <> 5 [r6c8]
 {  1} -3r2c7  9r2c7  7r2c1  5r6c1  3r6c7  [XY-Chain] <> 3 [r3c7]

will you still have them grouped or sorted by sets?
and if so, will the set determine the techniques required?
or will the puzzles have no "hint" as to how difficult they are?

I've merged sets T_03 and T_04, and plan to merge in T_05 -- the last set I generated (awhile back). The puzzles will now be identified sequentially as Puzzle NR_nnn. So far, I have not committed to merging in the few remaining XY_02 puzzles, but it's still a possibility.

Since the puzzles are no longer rated, I'll no longer be going back a week and edit puzzles to include my solutions for them.

Finally, as you may have noticed, I've also trimmed back to posting just one puzzle per day. This was suggested to me a long time back, and I've finally decided to heed that suggestion. I was posting multiple puzzles per day expecting people with various levels of experience to post replies to them. That isn't happening, so there isn't any need to continue posting multiple puzzles per day.

Far be it from me to tell you how many puzzles to post. I just want to make the point that there are probably more people enjoying the puzzles than actually post replies. I personally reply to a number of puzzles, but I also do puzzles that I don't reply to because I have nothing worthwhile to say.

just to add to that point. one of the biggest points of discussion in the forum is how often (or not) the VH puzzles are published.

Danny,
your "VH" type puzzles are/should be filling in the gaps in time between VH's nicely.

especially for the ones who want more practice with VH type puzzles. all someone has to do is pull up your VH puzzles and get all the practice needed.

Danny, if I may add one more thought, I hope you will rethink the cancellation of the ratings. I don't think they need to be complex, like assigning a group of moves to a given level, but it would be helpful if they were graded simply, like 1, 2 and 3. I personally pass up the VH but do the VH+ and Adv., so there's an example of how they help me, and perhaps others.

Okay, I'll continue to post and mark a VH puzzle daily. These puzzles will not have XYZ-Wing, though.

I'll then post a second puzzle daily that has no rating. I will keep the XY_nn set designator, but all remaining puzzles will fall into the the NR_nnn category. If someone gets stuck, then they can post a PM and ask others for comments. Discussions (see first post in this thread) have been seriously lacking in this sub-forum, and not posting ratings is one way that I'd hoped to encourage them -- especially among those who had been silently working VH-only puzzles.

We'll see how this works out.
