For the first time I found a sashimi X wing! This was after clearing up with 2 X wings. Nice!

There had been a long string of puzzles with XY-Wing solutions, but this one just needed an X-Wing on 2, at least it did on my first pass.

For me this was a nice challenge. I used an x-wing on 2, some meanigful cleanup which revealed a 689 xy-wing on 6 with pivot at r3c3 eliminating 6 at r2c9, solving the puzzle. I also found an x-wing on 3 that didn't contribute to the solution. I tried real hard for a solution after the x-wing on 2 but couldn't get there Marty. I'll give it another shot and also go trolling for some Sashimi x-wing, which will be a first for me.

Prakash, I'm not having any luck locating your sashimi x-wing. Would you give up a hint as to its location?

After the basics and the X wing on 2 and Xwing on 3, my grid looks like this:
Code:

.------------------.------------------.------------------.
| 26    4     1    | 69    689   3    | 2689* 5     7    |
| 3     689*  289  | 5     7     4    | 1     289-  269  |
| 7     5     89   | 2     689   1    | 4     3     69   |
:------------------+------------------+------------------:
| 4     7     58   | 1     59    6    | 3     289   29   |
| 9     2     35   | 7     35    8    | 6     1     4    |
| 1     38*   6    | 39    4     2    | 89*   7     5    |
:------------------+------------------+------------------:
| 8     39    4    | 36    26    7    | 5     29    1    |
| 26    69    7    | 8     1     5    | 29    4     3    |
| 5     1     23   | 4     23    9    | 7     6     8    |
'------------------'------------------'------------------'

I did indeed screw up, as the X-Wing on 2 wasn't enough on my second try. A Finned X-Wing on 8 does it, as does a flightless XY-Wing on 396 with transport, as does an XY-Wing on 896.

Code:
.------------------.------------------.------------------.
| 26    4     1    | 69    689   3    | 2689* 5     7    |
| 3     689*  289  | 5     7     4    | 1     289-  269  |
| 7     5     89   | 2     689   1    | 4     3     69   |
:------------------+------------------+------------------:
| 4     7     58   | 1     59    6    | 3     289   29   |
| 9     2     35   | 7     35    8    | 6     1     4    |
| 1     38*   6    | 39    4     2    | 89*   7     5    |
:------------------+------------------+------------------:
| 8     39    4    | 36    26    7    | 5     29    1    |
| 26    69    7    | 8     1     5    | 29    4     3    |
| 5     1     23   | 4     23    9    | 7     6     8    |
'------------------'------------------'------------------'

Prakash's grid above has an excess 9 in r2c2 because of the locked 9s in box7. Deleting the 9 exposes the 896 XY-Wing.

After the x wing on <2>, I used a skyscraper on <2> in C28 to knock off the 2 in R6C7. Or was that a Sashimi? Wasn't that the little guy in Austin Powers?

If the sashimi pattern contains a single fin, then the pattern is identical to a skyscraper. Both patterns will make the same deletion in the box containing the sashimi fin. However the skyscraper may also make a deletion in the box containing the top of the other skyscraper. Also note that the sashimi pattern with a single fin can be viewed in a mirror fashion that would then make the same deletion as the skyscraper.

If the sashimi pattern contains two fins, the pattern is not a skyscraper but the sashimi will still make the normal deletion in the box containing both fins.

For this puzzle, the sashimi pattern contains a single fin in r1c7 so it is the same as a skyscraper. If cell r3c7 also contained a 8, then the pattern would have two fins the pattern would not be a skyscraper but the sashimi pattern would still provide the deletion r2c8<>8.

Also the original sashimi pattern was (8)r26c27 which resulted in r2c8<>8. This pattern could also be viewed as a sashimi x-wing (8)r16c27 which would result in r1c13<>8.

The same set of 8s for a skyscraper or sashimi could also be termed an ER.
The stronly linked 8's in col2 deny an 8 at r6c7 since an 8 here would deny any position for an 8 in Box3
