I can get to this point and the hint shows 8 for r2c1, how do I get this. I admit I have read over the advanced step discriptions and don't understand them. Sorry if this is rehashing the same ole stuff but I really want to figure this out.

Code:

Look at the pair of 89's in row 3. This removes the other 8's in row three leaving your clue as the only 8 left in box1.

That particular situation with the 89s is called Naked Pairs. There are also naked triples, quads, etc., which fall under the general term of Subsets. The key is that "X" number of cells are restricted to possibilities for only "X" numbers.

Let's look at a triple for the numbers 123. The three cells could be 123-123-123 or 12-13-23 or 123-23-12 or any combination as long as those three numbers are the only possibilities in a row, column or box. Of course, that means all other 1s, 2s and 3s are removed from the other cells in that row, column or box.

Subsets, along with Locked Candidates, also known as Box-Line Interactions, are two basic techniques that need to be learned and used to clean up a grid in preparation for more advanced techniques.

On this site, those techniques are adequate to solve all but the Very Hards.

I can't picture that as an abstract. I think this has the situation you describe in a couple places but don't see specifically how to use that process.

Code:

+---------------+-------------+-----------------+
| 4  3    78    | 12 6    127 | 58   9     2578 |
| 6  5    1     | 8  9    27  | 3    27    4    |
| 2  789  789   | 4  3    5   | 1    6     78   |
+---------------+-------------+-----------------+
| 39 149  23569 | 12 1247 8   | 4569 23457 257  |
| 7  48   2358  | 6  24   9   | 458  2345  1    |
| 89 1489 2689  | 5  1247 3   | 4689 247   278  |
+---------------+-------------+-----------------+
| 38 6    38    | 7  12   12  | 45   45    9    |
| 1  79   79    | 3  5    4   | 2    8     6    |
| 5  2    4     | 9  8    6   | 7    1     3    |

Check out column 3, rows 1-3-8. There is a naked triple 789. Those three cells have 789 as the only possibilities and those cells must be solved with 7-8-9 although we don't yet know which goes in which cell. But we do know that 789 can be removed from the other cells in that column.

There's also a 4-5-8 triple in column 7.

That is correct because no 7, 8 or 9 can exist in any cell in that column other than the three cells forming the triple. Of course, the 789 and now the 3 are removed from rows 456 in that column.
