first thing I saw was coloring on 6 marked in the grid, takes out the 6 in r7c5, but that doesn't solve the puzzle.

that 6 elmination leaves the grid above, then...
the xy-wing with pincers in r7c5 and r8c8 finishes it off, takes out the 3 in r8c6. go Steelers !!

norm,

In your first grid, the strong link on <8> in C1 connects the cells <68> to make a W-wing which eliminates the same <6>. Then, I too found the XY-wing.

Your multi-coloring is also a "skyscraper".

Another step to clean up the <6> in R7C5 is an ER(T-shaped hinge) for digit <6> in Box 7
Code:

4       678     678     | 2       368     36      | 1       5       9
58     *568     1       | 4      *68      9       | 3       7       2
9       2       3       | 7       5       1       | 8       6       4
------------------------+-------------------------+------------------
1       3       5       | 6       9       8       | 4       2       7
6       4       78      | 1       2       57      | 59      89      3
2       78      9       | 3       4       57      | 6       1       58
------------------------+-------------------------+------------------
38      689     68      | 5       3-[6]7  2       | 79      4       1
7  er   569     4 er    | 8       1       36      | 2       39      56
35 er   1       2 er    | 9       367     4       | 57      38      568

After the initial scan, I noted a BUG+9 pattern, but I decided to pursue other avenues. Laughing

A Finned X-Wing and Skyscraper, both on 6, opened things up just enough to allow my new friend Medusa to do her thing and finish it off. Thanks again Keith, for introducing me to this technique.

Marty,

Perhaps we should make T-shirts for Sudoku addicts:

No Problem!
It's only a BUG+81.
