finned x-wing on 6's, opens up an x-wing on the 6's.

anyone else know if this is also a hidden unique rectangle??

anyways, that leads to this:

 	  | Code: | 6       1       589     | 38      45      39      | 489     2       7

3       4       2       | 7       89      1       | 89      5       6

7       89      589     | 2       45      6       | 1       349     389

------------------------+-------------------------+------------------

149     39      7       | 6       2       8       | 5       349     139

489     2       389     | 5       1       7       | 3489    6       389

18      5       6       | 9       3       4       | 2       7       18

------------------------+-------------------------+------------------

89      389     1       | 4       67      5       | 67      39      2

5       6       39      | 1       79      2       | 379     8       4

2       7       4       | 38      689     39      | 69      1       5 |

x-wing on 3's

then xy-chain

69-89-89-79-67 takes out 6 in r7c7

that is where i am now

				storm_norm,

there is a typo in your grid. r4c9 should not read 389, but 139 (there is an 8 in row 4).

Then there is an x-wing, followed by an xyz-wing -

or a jellyfish in another number.

You can finish with an xy- or w-wing. |

Using M/Pairs techniques, I have reached the position before

that quoted.

How does the xy-chain work in this case?

I have not come across it (by that term anyway) previously.

I am hoping that this puzzle will be a good exemplar of some

of the techniques with which I am unfamiliar. |

It looks like a quartet to me with 389/139/389/18.

How does that become a triple+single? |

This is where I run out of the basics:

 	  | Code: | +-------------------+-------------------+-------------------+

| 6     1     589   | 38    45    39    | 489   2     7     |

| 3     4     2     | 7     89    1     | 89    5     6     |

| 7     89    589   | 2     45    6     | 1     349   389   |

+-------------------+-------------------+-------------------+

| 149   39    7     | 6     2     8     | 5     349   139   |

| 489   2     389   | 5     1     7     | 34689 3469  389   |

| 18    5     6     | 9     3     4     | 2     7     18    |

+-------------------+-------------------+-------------------+

| 89    389   1     | 4     679   5     | 367   369   2     |

| 5     6     39    | 1     79    2     | 379   8     4     |

| 2     7     4     | 38    689   39    | 69    1     5     |

+-------------------+-------------------+-------------------+

 |

I see a jellyfish, but not any finned creature.

At the time I posted, there was a typo which I didn't notice. Ravel noted it in his post. |

From Keith's grid you can use the jellyfish, then an xy-wing.

Or a kite, some singles, x-wing, xyz-wing. Then there is a swordfish.

Instead of the swordfish (plus xy-wing) you can take a w-wing to solve it. |
