There are several different types of symmetry that can occur in pattern of cells of a sudoku puzzle that are initially filled in. These are:
* none
* 2-radial (this is by far the most common)
* 2-vertical (or the equivalent 2-horizontal)
* 2-diagonal
* 4-radial
* 4-vertical/horizontal
* 4-both diagonals
* 8-way

How did 2-radial become the most common? Is it because most crossword puzzles use it too?

Are there any sudoku generators that support an option for type of symmetry?
