Hi
I've been looking at this for two days and I don't see how the hint (the red 7) was determined. Can anyone put me out of my misery?
Kathy

I nearly got stuck here as well. In the end it needed three X wings to eliminate enough candidates to solve the puzzle. So...look for X wings Very Happy

May not solve the puzzle, but explains the hint:
The 7's in box 9 are in row 8 --> 7's in box 8 are in column 6 --> 7 in box 5 is at R4C5.

hi there,

look at row 8, column 7,8,9 there is the only place for "7" and this eliminates "7" from r8c4. You will see triple in c4, r568. Eliminates "2" from c4, r1,r2. You see pair "47" so exclude "7" from r1c5, r2c6. Only place for "7" in c5 is r4c5.

Good luck.

Since we're talking about the Sept. 26 puzzle, why can't I see the x-wings? I have the same numbers as Kathy except the 9 in the middle box but I do have the 7. I'm looking for the x-wings and can't find them.

Thanks

"Basic" moves get you to this point:
Code:
+----------------+----------------+----------------+
| 2348 59   59   | 47   28   6    | 2378 1    238  |
| 46   1    28   | 47   3    28   | 5    67   9    |
| 2368 7    238  | 1    9    5    | 238  68   4    |
+----------------+----------------+----------------+
| 23   4    1    | 5    7    2389 | 28   89   6    |
| 5    8    269  | 26   1    29   | 4    3    7    |
| 7    269  2369 | 236  28   4    | 1    589  258  |
+----------------+----------------+----------------+
| 1    56   567  | 8    4    37   | 9    2    35   |
| 9    25   4    | 23   6    1    | 378  578  358  |
| 28   3    278  | 9    5    27   | 6    4    1    |
+----------------+----------------+----------------+

Note that there is a remote naked pair, a chain of <28> from R2C3 to R6C5, that takes out <2> in R6C3. This is also coloring on <2> and, if you draw the pattern, you will have a Turbot fish that (for once) actually looks like a fish! Note that the useful chain has three links, an odd number.

The X-wing is on <2> in C59.

You have a hidden pair in your candidates for row 1: 5 and 9 only appear in columns 2 and 3.

Therefore you can eliminate other candidates from r1c2 and r1c3. Once you have done this there is only one place for the 4 in column 2: r4c2.

Good luck from here on.
