Having a mental moment here on this puzzle.

So far i have (sorry for unsophisticated sample):

{78} 9 6 {24} {478} 5 {1348} {12348} {1247}
4 {178} {18} {269} 3 {278} {689} {28} 5
2 3 5 {469} {4678} 1 {4689} {48} {479}
{38} {148} 9 7 2 6 {13458} {13458} {14}
5 2 7 {13} {48} {48} {13} 9 6
{368} {1468} {1348} {13} 5 9 7 {12348} {124}
{369} {46} {234} 5 {146} {234} {19} 7 8
1 {678} {28} {26} 9 {27} {45} {45} 3
{79} 5 {34} 8 {17} {34} 2 6 {19}

The clue that is given (a '7' in row 3, column 9) does not set off any lightbulbs over my head. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Hi Eddie,

Looking at your candidates in column 4, 4 can only be in rows 1 or 3. Therefore it is not elsewhere in box 2.

Eliminating other 4s in box 2 leaves a naked pair, 78, in row 1 columns 1 and 5.

Eliminating other 7 and 8s in row 1 leaves row 3 column 9 as the only place for a 7 in box 3.

Over to you now.

Angel,

Turns out to be something pretty elementary. These puzzles can be very humbling sometimes, as can my teenagers.

Thanks for the quick response. I was loosing valuable work time thinking of my "puzzle dilemna".

eddie-
thank you for saving me the embarrassment of asking the question. i was at the exact same place when i got stuck. it was straightforward after the hint, but it was driving me mental that i couldn't figure out why the hint was what it was.

thanks, angel, for the help.

chris
