 Am I wrong in thinking that this 'Hard' needs the X wing on 1 r38c35 to
 solve it?

 if you only want to use basics, you can see that in column 6, number 1 is only in sector 8; when you delete number 1 from r8c5 you can solve it with basics.

 I thought it was just me Hugh.  It's frustrating, isn't it?  I've been looking at an old VH from the archive all day and I STILL don't see it!  ugh...
