Following the previous "First" time for Daily Sudoku, that an "advanced" logic - i.e an X-Wing was needed, I find that an X-Wing is probably needed again.

After 17 entries, I noticed the X wing in 7 and so put a 5 into r5c9 etc...

Intreagued I went to draw, asked for "Today", put in my 17 entries, and asked for a hint YES it came up with the same 5 so it looks as if X-Wings are going to be a regular feature in the "Very Hard" puzzles!

George,
Thanks for your tips, I got the X-wing of 7 from r1c5, r1c9, r7c5 and r7c9.

The very hard level become harder and harder, so funny and should be kept it on~

Sorry, guys, but I just can't agree! Having learned about the X-Wing from the discussion earlier this week, I was looking forward to using it. So I was a bit disappointed to finish this 'Very Hard' puzzle with no advanced techniques whatsoever. Maybe you solved it with an X-Wing, but, believe me, it wasn't necessary.

I would rate the puzzle as 'medium'

Roger

No easier solution to find (RogerC, i suppose you made a lucky mistake, please refer to the grid below to tell, how you could continue).

Here is a more complicated solution :)

When you noticed the hidden 59-pair in column 7, which leaves a 67-pair in r29c7, there is another x-wing for 7 (this time in columns) with column 4 (r29c4). This one kills the 7 for r2c8 and r9c8, so that only r5c8 can be 7 in column 8.
Code:
-----------------------
 4 6 . | 8 . 9 | 3 5 .
 9 . . | X . . | X . .
 . 7 3 | . . . | 2 . 9
-----------------------
 2 9 8 | 4 5 7 | 1 6 3
 3 4 6 | 2 1 8 | . . .
 7 1 5 | 6 9 3 | 4 2 8
-----------------------
 1 . 4 | 9 . . | 8 3 .
 . . 7 | . . . | . . .
 . 3 9 | X . 5 | X . 2
-----------------------

Indeed, I agree. This puzzle took maybe 20 minutes for me, and I consider myself a novice Sudokuian. There was a period of time I remember being very confused about what to do next, but i saw it eventually. Maybe it was luck. :)

I wish I had kept track of the sequence I took to solve, as maybe I unknowingly used this X-Wing thing after all Smile

The only way I solved this was by the comments above explaining the X-Wing.

Thanks. I learned something new today.
