Now, I've had this before where a 'VH' fell out using basics
only to find that I'd put in a 'lucky guess' number which had
'solved' the puzzle. But today I did this twice, and both times
it came out with basics.

Two 'lucky guesses' or a fault in the grading system....?

The basics solved it for me as well. It might be that the grading system upped the level based on how few cells were given, not just the solving techniques.

Having done it twice I checked with draw play. The elementary 6 in Box 8 as a 1st move makes it change from v hard to hard. But as a check that it was simply a transcription error I tried 2 other 1st moves neithe or both of which left it as v Hard !!!!!!!!!

I also did it twice with basics. It's not the first time and probably won't be the last.

in some puzzles,
the VH grade can be justified by the need for multiple moves.
(even when they are all "basic" moves.)

but in the present example (2012.Apr.19),
the puzzle is solved with just one move.
(one "basic" move, line\box.)
    28 cells given --
    5...6.8.....5.23....9.1...79.8..6.7..1.....2..7.3..6.87...8.1....34.7.....6.3...5
    [ play ]

    after 12 "singles" --
    5...638.....5.23..3.9814..7938..6.7.61...8.23.7.3..6.87..68.13.1.34.7.....6.3.7.5
    [ play ]
