Got the x-wing on 3 followed by a type 1 UR on 48 in b47 for a 2-stepper.

I need help replicating the above. Here's my grid after basics and two X-Wings (3) and I can't make that UR turn into a Type 1.
Code:

+--------------+------------+------------+
| 1289 3   18  | 89  7  5   | 4  129 6   |
| 1489 489 5   | 2   6  348 | 37 179 19  |
| 249  7   6   | 349 49 1   | 5  8   239 |
+--------------+------------+------------+
| 49   1   2   | 6   8  37  | 37 5   349 |
| 6    5   3   | 1   49 47  | 2  79  8   |
| 7    489 48  | 39  5  2   | 1  6   349 |
+--------------+------------+------------+
| 3    2   9   | 7   1  6   | 8  4   5   |
| 148  48  148 | 5   2  9   | 6  3   7   |
| 5    6   7   | 48  3  48  | 9  12  12  |

I see that as a Type 6 UR that gets rid of the 4 in R6C2 - which doesn't really help (at least not immediately).

I had three moves...
Code:
x-wing(3)
xy-wing(89-4) r1c4 ; r3c4<>4
xy-wing(29-1) r1c8 ; r2c8<>1

I couldn't make the UR or the xyz-wing (at least two of them) solve it - but I was rushing...

Marty,

I think there are a few more basics. Look at row 6.

Not sure that helps too much, though, in terms of the UR.

Heh heh, that seems to be the rule rather than the exception. Embarassed

Thanks.

A second bite at the apple, I think. This turned out to be, for me at least, a tricky little puzzle both during and after basics. After a couple of passes through the basic tools I arrived at a grid that was in agreement with Keith. The UR on 48 stood unresolved at this point. The x-wing on 3 led to a 489 xy-wing with pivot at r1c4 eliminating 4 at r3c4. After more churning, up popped the type 1 UR on 48 in c23 placing 9 in r6c2 solving the puzzle in 3 steps.

The Type 6 UR(48) does hold the key to a two-step solution by creating a simple pincer move...
Code:

After the x-wing(3)...
*-----------------------------------------------------------*
 | 1289  3     (18)  | (89)  7     5     | 4     129   6     |
 | 1489  489   5     | 2     6     348   | 37    179   19    |
 | 249   7     6     | 349   49    1     | 5     8     239   |
 |-------------------+-------------------+-------------------|
 | 49    1     2     | 6     8     37    | 37    5     49    |
 | 6     5     3     | 1     49    47    | 2     79    8     |
 | 7     *48+9 *48   | 3-9   5     2     | 1     6     349   |
 |-------------------+-------------------+-------------------|
 | 3     2     9     | 7     1     6     | 8     4     5     |
 | 148   *48   *48+1 | 5     2     9     | 6     3     7     |
 | 5     6     7     | 48    3     48    | 9     12    12    |
 *-----------------------------------------------------------*

UR(48)r68c23[(9)r6c2=(1)r8c3] - (1=8)r1c3 - (8=9)r1c4 ; r6c4<>9

To avoid the DP, r6c2=9 or ...
r8c2=1 and so r1c3=8 and r1c4=9 - hence in both cases r6c4<>9

(FWIW With some kludgy "almost" logic you can use a fin (3)r1c4 and the strong links of the x-wing to make the same elimination after basics for a one-stepper.)
