Why does r9c8 have to be a 4?

On the other hand, observe that the pair of numbers left for r2 are 2 and 9; since the 9 cannot be placed in r2c4, it must go in r2c9 etc.

Are you kidding? Row 7 and Row 8 already have a 4(fixed clue) col 7 already has a 4 (fixed clue), row 9, col 9 is already filled up with fixed clue 1 - only leaves one space left for the 4 - as I said!

Holly's original transcript is slightly incorrect - the original Sudoku shows
the Nr 1 is already in r9c9. Therefore, the guest's reply that Nr 4 must be in r9c8 is correct, although his manners in replying to the question are a bit suspect to say the least!!!

Therefore, Philmac's reply that Nr 2 should be in r2c4 and Nr 9 should be in r2c9 are correct and the Sudoku should be easily solved from there.
Another hint is following row 8. There is a pair of 5 and 7 so you can place Nr 6 in r8c1 and Nr 9 in r8c8.

Cheers.

Was just trying to help. Apologise if you were offended by my ' manners'.
