If you want to link to another thread, copy and paste the URL. For example:

http://www.dailysudoku.com/sudoku/forums/viewtopic.php?t=4242&sid=914671c80379a978a8422951e19e36ed

You can delete the junk at the end, so you only need

http://www.dailysudoku.com/sudoku/forums/viewtopic.php?t=4242

This will take you to the thread.

If you want to link to a particular message, add the string &start=?? to the URL, where ?? is the message number. For example

http://www.dailysudoku.com/sudoku/forums/viewtopic.php?t=4242&start=17

The only way I know is to count the messages in the thread and add the &start=?? by hand.

There is also an &down parameter. I do not know what it does.

Building on what Wapati noted:

The above line appears at the top of a message. To the left of the word "Posted" is an icon which looks like a piece of paper with the upper right corner folded. Click that icon. What you see on your screen won't change but a change will be made in the URL. Linking to that changed URL will take you to the specific message.

Good observation Wapati. I had never paid any attention to that icon or knew what it was.

where you can choose something like Copy Shortcut,
which gives you the URL --

-- this is the URL which (a) takes you to the proper page of the proper Topic
and (b) scrolls to the position of the desired Post.

or you can drop the 2nd occurrence of the post-number --

-- this shorter URL
takes you to the proper page of the proper Topic
but leaves you at the top of the page.
