PS I have a bookmark set for the main page, and it gets used a lot. |

Why would one want one?
The [back] button does the job admirably.

What is a "bookmark" in this context?
I have the main page on my "favourites" list - in order to
avoid having to use Google everytime. This seems good enough, or
is 'bookmark' just another name for setting a 'favourite'?
Whilst considering oddly named features, what is a 'thumbnail'?
I understand how these work in PHYSICAL books but as one does
not 'read' a website sequentially a bookmark is irrelevant and the
function of a thumbnail can be obtained by a search engine or
using the ubiquitous "drill-down" facilities whereby each page
gives a list of "sub-pages" associated with it (and to which one
returns when operating the 'back' button from a sub-page).

The new link seems to have no text to entitle it.
One would never know to click on the coloured pattern - unless one
has read this thread in this forum!
There seems to be little point in the link. It just increases the number
of times that one has to click the [back] button in order to exit
from the daily sudoku site. It is bad enough working back from the
print of the 'Draw' or Daily puzzle - but at least that is manageable
by going back after each usage, rather than building up a gigantic
trail and mammoth back-click task at the end. There are some places
where it seems to be inevitable that a huge trail is created. Working
through ten pages of Google results is one example but at least that
is a quick action to back out of ten pages. Backing out of this site is
slower - especially with the PDF screens.
So, thanks to SamGJ for responding to a user request so promptly
- even though the feature requested was unnecessary.
PS: I accept that I need not click on the fancy link and I will just
have to get used to it glaring out at me from the top right of the
screen - just as if it were a corporate logo displaced from top left.

A back button in a browser typically is only useful if one hasn't submitted any information to any 'forms'. Once this is done, the back button will want to know if you want to submit the information only.
Also, if you are browsing the forums, some people (myself included) tend to use links as opposed to the 'back' button. The back button for me tends to get very little use. When I'm done with a site, instead of backing out, I simply hit the 'home' button, search for a different site, or click on one of my bookmarked sites.
The link is actually quite useful (for some of us, I guess). |

"Bookmark" is Netscapese (aka the Mozilla dialect) for "favorite" in MSIE. Oldtimers like me think it's odd that "favorite" is more widely recognized than "bookmark," especially since the Netscape browser was available for at least two years before Microsoft put IE into Windows.

On a website with pictorial content, a "thumbnail" is a small graphic image (usually a picture) associated with an anchor tag (a "link") that points to a larger copy of the same image. Photo galleries are often set up with one or two dozen "thumbnails" on a single page, so visitors can decide which pictures they want to see in detail without wasting a lot of download time. dcb |
