An xy-wing (234) will solve it.
There are interesting alternatives, such as a UR (86), but the xy-wing is stiil need.

I saw the Type 1 UR but didn't use it, then found the same XY that you did.

Code:

+-----------+-----------+-----------+
| 4   9    2 | 37  8  1  | 37  6  5   |
| 3   5    8 | 6   24 27 | 47  9  1   |
| 1   7    6 | 9   5  34 | 2  48 38  |
+-----------+-----------+-----------+
| 9  238   5 | 234 1  6  | 34 7  238 |
| 7   23   4 | 8   23 9  | 1  5  6   |
| 68 2368  1 | 5   7  34 | 9  48 238 |
+-----------+-----------+-----------+
| 68 68   3 | 27  9  27 | 5  1  4   |
|  5  1   9 | 34  34 8  | 6  2  7   |
|  2  4   7 | 1   6  5  | 8  3  9   |
+-----------+-----------+-----------+

I got this far and can't see the next step. I must be missing something obvious. I used one xyz-wing(234) to eliminate the 4 in r2c6.

Newbie would appreciate a not-so-terse hint.

Also, please, where's a good place to find definitions of all the terms you folks use. I've looked elsewhere on this site, but never seem to find the idiot's guide to terminology.
Thanks

Hi Woodbux, welcome to the forum. There is an XY-Wing on 23-24-34 pivoted in r5c5.

The Sudopedia site has a lot of information.

http://www.sudopedia.org/wiki/Main_Page

If that is not clear, you can Google sudoku techniques and you'll find lots of information out there.

Of course, always feel free to ask any questions you might have right here. There are lots of people who will be happy to help.

Hi!

Here is a good place to look up terms.

http://www.sudopedia.org/wiki/Terminology

As for this puzzle:

Code:
Here is an x-wing on 4s that eliminates the 4 in r2c6.
There is no xyz that does that in this puzzle.
.------------------.------------------.------------------.
| 4     9     2    | 37    8     1    | 37    6     5    |
| 3     5     8    | 6     24    27-4 | 47    9     1    |
| 1     7     6    | 9     5    *34   | 2    *48    38   |
:------------------+------------------+------------------:
| 9     238   5    | 234   1     6    | 34    7     238  |
| 7     23    4    | 8     23    9    | 1     5     6    |
| 68    2368  1    | 5     7    *234  | 9    *48    238  |
:------------------+------------------+------------------:
| 68    68    3    | 27    9     27   | 5     1     4    |
| 5     1     9    | 34    34    8    | 6     2     7    |
| 2     4     7    | 1     6     5    | 8     3     9    |
'------------------'------------------'------------------'

As for what you are missing it is an xy-wing on 234.
.------------------.------------------.------------------.
| 4     9     2    | 37    8     1    | 37    6     5    |
| 3     5     8    | 6    *24    247  | 47    9     1    |
| 1     7     6    | 9     5    *34   | 2     48    38   |
:------------------+------------------+------------------:
| 9     238   5    | 234   1     6    | 34    7     238  |
| 7     23    4    | 8    *23    9    | 1     5     6    |
| 68    2368  1    | 5     7     24-3 | 9     48    238  |
:------------------+------------------+------------------:
| 68    68    3    | 27    9     27   | 5     1     4    |
| 5     1     9    | 34    34    8    | 6     2     7    |
| 2     4     7    | 1     6     5    | 8     3     9    |
'------------------'------------------'------------------'

That is the only hard step required in this puzzle. Smile

In the position you posted, there is an XY-wing that takes out <3> in R6C6.

Thank you for the sudopedia links. Perfect!

And thanks for the hints.... especially the handholding, wapati. That ended my frustration.
