are you going to post any solutions? i can't get much past pencilmarkings with only a few placed digits and tons of candidates in each cell.

I'm sure you placed 6 in r1c1.

Have you checked how the entries in column 1 and row 6 influence box 4?

If this is really where you are:

Code:
+-----------------------+
| 6 1 3 | . . . | . . 2 |
| 8 . 7 | . . . | . . . |
| 5 9 . | 8 . . | . . . |
-------------------------
| . . 9 | . 7 3 | . . . |
| . . . | 2 . 1 | . . . |
| 2 . . | 6 8 9 | 4 . . |
-------------------------
| . . . | . . 6 | . 4 1 |
| . . . | . . . | 6 . 7 |
| 4 . . | . . . | 5 9 . |
+-----------------------+

I think the rest is singles but I’m not sure how you placed 2 in column 1. I had to use an XYZ-wing.

Even without the 2 in column 1, isn’t 3 forced into r6c9?

Triple-click or mark with the mouse to see the hint wrote:
After placing the 6 clean the candidates and try to find the same 3 numbers in a row and a column. This will give you 2 hidden triples in boxes.

how is the 3 forced. and i actually placed the 2 in r4c1 and r6c8, so so much for what i've done. (and i can't remember what led me to those points) so can you tell me how you got to yours? where was the xyx wing that placed the 2 in 6,1???

Code:

| 8 . 7 | . . . | . . . |

-------------------------

| . . . | 6 8 9 | 4 . . |
-------------------------
| . . . | . . 6 | . 4 1 |
| . . . | . . . | 6 . 7 |
| 4 . . | . . . | 5 9 . |
+-----------------------+

The (468) triple in box 4 ensures that the 5 in that box lies in row 6. All candidates but 3 are then excluded from r6c9.

If you spot the pairs (59) (in column 4), (68) (in row 4) and (23) in row 7, you should get to here:

Code:
+---------------------------------------+
| 6   1    3   | 7    9   4 | 8  5    2 |
| 8   2    7   | 13   6   5 | 9  13   4 |
| 5   9    4   | 8    13  2 | 13 7    6 |
-----------------------------------------
| 12  68   9   | 4    7   3 | 12 68   5 |
| 3   4    68  | 2    5   1 | 7  68   9 |
| 127 57   125 | 6    8   9 | 4  12   3 |
-----------------------------------------
| 79  578  58  | 59   23  6 | 23 4    1 |
| 129 35   125 | 59   4   8 | 6  23   7 |
| 4   36   26  | 13   123 7 | 5  9    8 |
+---------------------------------------+

Now take r8c2 as the pivot of an XYZ-wing. You'll be able to eliminate 5 from r8c2 and complete the puzzle.

Also, an xy-chain eliminates the 8 from R5C3 and solves the puzzle.

Sheryl,

I also am not sure how you placed the 2 in column one so early as it was one of the last numbers I placed in the puzzle. The XYZ wing on 5-7-8 opened it up for me.

If you do start it again, the earlier hint about the C1 and R6 affect on Box 4 should really help.

Good luck.

Kathy

well, i did the whole thing over again. very carefully. there were lots and lots of deductions and then an xyz wing (on the 578 in B7) that did it for me. finally!
