That's very helpful coming from an expert. It does more or less confirm what I had suspected - interesting though, and thanks for taking the time to post such a detailed response.

I am intrigued to know whether there is an order to the solution of a puzzle.
Clearly towards the end the answer is NO as there are many different ways to fill in the EASY remaining blanks. Similarly ...

I have to admit that I found this hard!

I have managed to do every other Sudoku puzzle (in the month that I have been doing them) by filtering and looking at PAIRS and gaps in sequences. This include ...

Why does r9c8 have to be a 4?

On the other hand, observe that the pair of numbers left for r2 are 2 and 9; since the 9 cannot be placed in r2c4, it must go in r2c9 etc.

r8c3 is given as 6 in the PUZZLE (i.e. it is 'fixed' from the outset). Thus these are not solutions to the same puzzle but to 2 different puzzles.

r9c8 or r9c9 must be 1 (reason: r5c7)
Hence r8c4 or r8c5 must be 1
Also r8c4 or r8c5 must be 3 (reason: r7c8 & r9c1)
Hence r9c4 must be 4

Hope that helps

Phil
