For those who haven't tried to access Sudopedia lately, it's been down for several days and there doesn't seem to be any communication available to those hosting the website/server.

Danny,

That's too bad.

Maybe someone has a copy of the content and it can be put into Wikipedia?

Pat found a possible phone number, but it is invalid.

I found Ruud van der Werf on LinkedIn, and have sent a request to connect.

We shall see.

edit: I found a list of six Sudoku forums that Ruud say he is a member of. Four of those are dead. Only this site (Daily Sudoku) and Sudoku Programmers are still running.

He's also a member of EnjoySudoku ... the reincarnation of another defunct forum. Many of his entries are present, but he hasn't been active in a long time.

There's a snapshot of the site in the Wayback Machine from April 09. All the links I tried seemed to work. Not sure how easy it is to re-construct from this copy..

Ruud never claimed his old account on the New Sudoku Players Forum.

Pat,

That is good news. Do you have any idea what happened?

I see that it is still hosted at Ruud's mostly dead site, and they are still not asking for donations.

Pat,

As we speak, I am making a copy of Sudopedia. At 1h45m, 160 MB, and counting. I am about to leave town for three days. We will see what I have when I get back on Wednesday morning.

Pat,

I am only dimly aware of what I did. I used HTTrack to mirror the Sudopedia site on to my hard drive. It took a couple of days, but it did complete. I now have a copy that seems to work fine. It is about 1.33 GB. I plan to put it on a thumb drive and / or DVD for safekeeping.

It is about 1.33 GB.

say you visit sudopedia.org/wiki/Hidden_Subset
  • you could save an HTML snapshot
  • or (better) click the "edit" link
and save the contents of the edit-box (in wikiMedia language)
  • if you used a crawler which followed all links
then you may have saved both ??
there's also a "history" link --
so, if you followed all links, you also got 11 versions (full history) of the article.
(they save a separate version even if only 1 character was changed.)
this explains the huge size.

and if you followed the "discussion" link,
then you also got the associated discussion ( sudopedia.org/wiki/Talk:Hidden_Subset ) etc

for each article (and for each associated discussion)
you have (presumably) 2 copies of each historical version --
the 2nd copy is the one obtained via the "edit" link,
where the textarea (edit-box) contains the source (in wikiMedia language).

Pat,

I appear to have EVERYTHING. I can look at the edit page, I can see eleven versions of the history.

Even better, I can update my mirror copy by running the software again. So, I have a fully functioning copy of Wikipedia on my hard drive.

EXCEPT: I cannot copy it to a DVD or to a flash drive. Windows copy fails, possibly because of "illegal" characters in file names. I suppose I could try to use the same software to mirror my copy to another drive.

My advice? Make your own mirror. I used WinHT. It ran for a few days, and I have a very high speed internet connection. (Actually, the software limits itself so as to not bog down your connection or the site being copied. Pretty cool stuff.)
